Designing facial and bodily injury

The injury planning and designing for the main character of an ongoing comic book project called Deadman's Company, which features the supernatural in WW1. The young man has suffered such injuries as a result of being caught by a mortar blast and it greatly affects his face and most notably his mouth.
The original plan for the injury was going to be a close range gunshot to the face from below the chin, although this was changed as blast injuries were incredibly common, but are scarcely touched upon due to their explicit appearance and difficulty in presenting in work.
